Birthday Blossoms Marigold and Cosmos Cards for October Birthdays

Hi Everyone, Marigold and Cosmos are the birth flowers for October, Marigold are usually dark yellow and orange whilst Cosmos range from a very dark maroon through all shades of pink to white, giving you lots of choice where your color scheme is concerned. I found this Sunshine Flowers clear  stamp set which not only contains a Marigold and Cosmos stamp but also Daisy and Pansy and a seed packet which gave me everything I needed for this month's three cards.

For the first card I used an emboss resist technique with the Marigold stamp and some of the lovely new Distress Oxide ink pads from Tim Holtz, which are a joy to use.

To start with I trimmed a piece of smooth white card to approximately 9.3 x 13.8cm, I stamped the marigold stamp three times across the left corner of the card with a Watermark ink pad (white pigment ink would have worked too), I then heat embossed this with white opaque embossing powder.

I used three Distress Oxide ink pads to create the graduated color effect, starting in the corner with   Fired brick I used a foam ink blending tool and applied the ink directly to the card over the stamped Marigolds. Using a clean foam pad I added Spiced Marmalade blending it with the Fired Brick and finally, again with a clean foam pad I added Fossilized Amber, making sure all the stamped flowers were covered with ink and the inks were all blended together.

To make the splatter effect I spread some of each color of ink onto my craft mat and added a little bit of water to each. I dipped a small paint brush into one color and then gently flicked the ink over the card and repeated this with the other two colors until I was happy with the effect, then used a heat gun to dry it off. Finally, when I was sure it was all dry I wiped the stamped flowers with a paper towel to remove any ink and make them stand out.

I mounted the panel onto black card and then onto an A6 white card blank. The greeting is made up from the word "Happy" die cut from black card, attached with adhesive foam pads, and the word "birthday" stamped underneath in black ink. 

I really like the way this card turned out and hope you do too.

Materials used: 
The second card uses the Cosmos stamp from the same Sunshine Flowers clear stamp set. This time I have stamped and fussy cut the flowers.

I started with a 12.5cm square white blank card and layered that with peach card and a peach and white striped paper. I hand cut a piece of white vellum in a pennant shape that fits over the striped paper layer and attached that to the top edge of the striped paper leaving the bottom loose to add some dimension.

I stamped the Cosmos flowers twice in black ink on white card, then colored the flowers and leaves with marker pen, fussy cut them and adhered them to the vellum, using different sizes of foam pads so that they would be raised and would also overlap. I added some green sequins that co-ordinate with the leaf color for decoration.

I hand cut peach and white card into layered penant shapes and stamped the greeting onto the white card with Fired Brick Distress Oxide ink, I used adhesive foam pads for this too and overlapped it onto the vellum.

I really like the color scheme for this card, the vellum adds an extra layer and allows the flowers to stand out better than if they were directly onto the striped background.

I used the Sunshine Flowers stamp set for the third card as well, this time I went for a more rustic look and used the seed packet stamp as well.

Hand made birthday card with stamped marigolds on a woodgrain and a burlap hessian background


I started by cutting Kraft card into a 13cm square card base, then cut a piece of woodgrain paper to about 12.2cm square, inked the edges with Vintage Sepia ink and used double sided tape to attach it to the card base. I cut a piece of Burlap Hessian ribbon to fit across the centre of the card and attached enamel dots to two of the corners.

I stamped the seed packet image onto white card with black ink and stamped the Marigold flower inside it then colored the whole thing with marker pens and cut it out. I cut a piece of Core'dinations card slightly bigger than the fussy cut image, scruffed the edges, attached the stamped image to it and then adhered the whole thing at an angle on the hessian ribbon in the centre of the card. 

I cut two small rectangles of the woodgrain paper, inked the edges and stamped a word of greeting of each, then used a natural wood mini peg to clip it to the top of the stamped image.

I love the rustic, country feel of this card and the way the enamel dots add a decorative touch without being too glitzy. Hope you like it too. Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.
